Probably the port most often visited by ships and sailors of the U.S. SIXTH Fleet, Naples, Italy is now part of our Liberty Call series.
Depicted on the obverse/front side of this 2'' antique bronze coin is the majestic Mt. Vesuvius, a highly detailed rendering of Castel Nuovo and a remarkable image of USS MT WHITNEY (LCC-20), flagship of the Commander Sixth Fleet.
On the reverse/back side is a colorful map of Italy with the SIXTH Fleet emblem annotating the approximate location of Naples/Gaeta. Since Naples is frequently the starting point for a number of visitor day trips, images of Pompeii and Sorrento/Amalfi are depicted.
As with all of our Liberty Call series coins, we have tried to incorporate the best images we could to accurately depict a “typical” day of liberty in Naples. Obviously there are many other images and memorable sites to others since there is a large concentration of all branches of the U.S. and NATO Forces but we have tried to focus this coin primarily on Navy (and of course Marine Corps) liberty adventures. If there appears to be a demand for a more “all inclusive” coin, we will be happy to create one in the future. Ideas are always welcome!
