Named in honor of America's World War victory over Japan at Iwo Jima, USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) was commissioned June 30, 2001, and of this writing remains active in service. She saw action in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Task Force Katrina.
Stretching 844 feet in length and displacing 40,530 tons fully underway, the Iwo Jima can travel at a top speed of 22 knots. It supports a mix of 30 helicopters and 6-8 AV/8B Harrier II aircraft.
This coin is dedicated to the courage and commitment of all those who serve aboard the USS Iwo Jima. The obverse features a detailed rendering of the mighty aircraft carrier. The reverse bears the official ship emblem, with the motto "uncommon valor."
