The USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) is the only conventionally-powered aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy Fleet, serving as the sole ship in the Navy's Kennedy Class since 1967.
Dubbed "Big John," the ship measures 1,050 feet in length and contains more than 80,000 feet of effective landing area on its massive flight deck. Home to 4,642 officers and crew, the John F. Kennedy supports 80 combat aircraft and can travel through the water at an impressive top speed of 30 knots. Since receiving her commission on September 7, 1968, the John F. Kennedy has completed more than fifteen deployments, and has played a vital role in directly supporting American and Coalition forces during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
This coin commemorates the outstanding service of the USS John F. Kennedy and her dedicated crew. The obverse contains a detailed rendering of America's 35th President depicted next to the words: "Defending freedom in its hour of darkness." The reverse contains the emblem of the USS John F. Kennedy.
