Launched on 21 May 1960, the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) is one of the most enduring ships in U.S. Navy history. The second U.S. Navy ship named in honor of the birthplace of powered flight, the USS Kitty Hawk is a massive supercarrier, stretching 1,047 feet in length and supporting a full complement of 85 combat aircraft and more than 4,500 officers and crew. Capable of cutting through the water at 35 knots, the Kitty Hawk has a displacement of 60,000 tons. Supporting the Navy's Carrier Air Wing Five, the Kitty Hawk has completed more than a dozen deployments and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its role in supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001. She was decommissioned in May of 2009, subsequently berthed at Bremerton, Washington.
