USS TRAYER (BST-21)

Timeless Military Coins

  • SIZE & SHAPE: 1.75'' ROUND
  • FINISH: SOLID BRONZE WITH ANTIQUE PATINA; 3D DEEP RELIEF "SPLASH" FINISH; ENAMEL COLOR

Several nights a week Navy Engineers attempt to sink the USS Trayer, while brand new recruits attempt to keep her afloat, often faced with everything from uncontrollable fires from missile attacks to catastrophic flooding. In the end, the USS Trayer always comes out all right. As the Navy’s premier Arleigh Burke-class destroyer simulator, the ship has never been to sea but it has seen more action than all the other ships in the fleet – combined.

The simulator was named after James Sheldon Trayer, an officer in the Navy, recipient of the Navy Cross, and commander of the first company of recruits to graduate from the Great Lakes Recruit Training Command in 1911.

Commissioned in 2007, the USS Trayer is an invaluable tool for training the next generation of sailors to respond to real life situations in a controlled environment. Thanks to the Trayer, textbook theory becomes hardened reality to the 36,000 recruits that walk her decks.

Minted in the USA from solid bronze, using special deep-relief coining dies, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this coin celebrates the men and women who train our future sailors.

The obverse features three recruits working together to fight one of the USS Trayer’s obstacles. The reverse depicts the seal of the USS Trayer.
