The USS Turner Joy (DD-951) held an important place in defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. As Forest Sherman-class destroyer for the US Navy, she is impressively equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions.
The USS Turner Joy is named after Admiral Charles Turner Joy, an admiral during World War II and the Korean War. The USS Turner Joy spent her entire career in the Pacific. She participated extensively in the Vietnam War, and was one of the principal ships involved in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. The Navy decommissioned her on 22 November 1982 and the USS Turner Joy is now a museum ship in Bremerton, Washington.
Commissioned on 3 August 1959, the USS Turner Joy has a displacement of approximately 2,800 long tons and stretches some 407 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare.
Minted in the USA from solid bronze, using special deep-relief coining dies, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this coin pays tribute to the USS Turner Joy and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a starboard view of the USS Turner Joy cutting through the water. The reverse displays the emblem of the United States Navy.
